Boston Turnaround School Unjustly Dismisses History Teacher
History teacher E. Chris Summerhill was dismissed from English High School, a Boston "turnaround" school in which the administration has the authority to dismiss teachers on a whim. Summerhill was dismissed after receiving complaints about supplementing his class with a discussion about his involvement and arrest in a Black Lives Matter protest in December. The School Department, however, claims that his removal was based on his "work history" and not the complaints about discussing the protest.
We commend the Boston Teachers Union for standing behind Summerhill. This is a clear example of why we must fight this kind of far-reaching authority of administrators in turnaround schools: educators should have the freedom to discuss social justice issues in real and relevant ways. No teacher should be dismissed for facilitating discussion about present-day issues of race and democracy.
